In the days before X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, the best chance viewers had to get on the television was to
dress up as a medieval knight and undertake a series of challenges, usually involving stacking cardboard boxes while
under fire from a hosepipe, all the while being encouraged to play their Joker by an overexcited presenter dressed as a
jester, ankle bells forever tinkling as he hooted with laughter. After all, that was how the Duchess of York got her
face on the box. 



Stuart Hall’s It’s a Knockout was a preposterous amalgam of gang show and folk games that ran for an
astonishing 16 years on prime time. Millions of Britons used to tune in to watch its insanely pointless routines. Though
it can safely be said that no one found it as much fun as its presenter; Hall was a man apparently attached to a
canister of laughing gas. 



 

But when Knockout died its natural death, its progenitor did not depart with it. Before he even slipped on his
jester’s pantaloons, Hall was an established broadcasting polymath, a man equally adept at commentating on motor
racing as he was at reading the regional news. And, since 1958, he had spent his every winter Saturday afternoon
reporting from north-western football matches for the radio. Fifty-one years on, as he approaches his 80th birthday on
Christmas Day, he is still at it, his short radio essays from Blackburn, Burnley or Bolton a glorious highlight of Five
Live’s Sports Report. 



There is no match too dull for Hall to find within it opportunity to wax lyrical, no goalless draw in a force-10 gale
too uninspiring for him to find a suitable allusion from Shelley or Byron or Shakespeare. Rolling words around his mouth
like vintage claret, to his fans he rises above the clichés of reporting the game to deliver two-minute masterpieces,
flights of magnificent fancy capable of cheering even those who have just heard their team has lost 6-0. He described
Tommy Smith of Liverpool as being a “dyspeptic water buffalo”, and had this to say about Manchester
City’s Georgi Kinkladze: “Kinkladze – twinkle, twinkle, twirl, tantalise, titillate, titubate.
Tippy-toed. Tumultuous. Only one word will suffice: terpsichorean.” To his detractors he is merely bonkers, a
charge to which he would doubtless gleefully plead guilty. 



To celebrate Hall’s birthday, on Thursday 5 Live Sport presents a live radio tribute from the City of Manchester
Stadium, where guests including Graeme Souness and Francis Lee will do their best to be heard above the insistent
cackling of the guest of honour.
